Know Your Cancer
Simple, reliable information about cancer — what it is, what to watch for, and when to ask a doctor. Written for everyone, in plain language.
Please read first: this page offers general educational information only. It is not medical advice, it does not diagnose anything, and it never replaces consultation with a qualified medical professional. If anything concerns your health, please see a registered doctor.
The Basics
Our bodies are built from cells that grow, divide and replace themselves in an orderly way. Cancer begins when some cells stop following that order — they grow without stopping, and can spread beyond where they began.
Knowing this changes how you face it: cancer is a disease of the body's own discipline, which is why medicine has so many ways to study and treat it. It is not a punishment, not contagious, and never a reason for shame.
Types
Each begins in a different part of the body. What matters most is not memorising them — it's knowing that every type deserves a doctor's attention early.
Begins in breast tissue, most often noticed as a lump or a change in shape or skin. Both women and men can be affected — any persistent change deserves an examination.
Occurs on the lips, tongue, cheek lining or throat. Strongly associated with tobacco and areca-nut use — which makes it among the most preventable. Watch for patches, sores or difficulty chewing.
Affects the cervix and usually develops slowly over years — which makes regular screening especially valuable. HPV infection is a major known factor; ask a doctor about vaccination.
Begins in the airways or lung tissue. Tobacco smoke is the leading known cause. A cough that stays, breathlessness or chest discomfort should be discussed — especially by smokers.
Develops in the colon or rectum, usually from small growths called polyps that form slowly over time. Changes in bowel habits, blood in stool or unexplained discomfort are worth reporting early.
Occurs in a small gland in men below the bladder, and mostly grows slowly with age. Urinary changes are common with age for many reasons — a doctor can tell which checks make sense.
Leukaemia and lymphoma affect blood or the lymphatic system — the body's infection-fighting network. Persistent tiredness, fevers, unexplained weight loss or swollen glands lasting weeks should be examined.
The most visible kind — a mole, patch or sore that changes or doesn't heal. Strong sun exposure adds risk for some types; a changing spot is easy to show a doctor early.
Warning Signs
Anywhere on the body — breast, neck, armpit, groin — especially one that is new, growing, or painless.
Losing weight noticeably without trying, over weeks, is a signal your body wants examined.
Any wound or ulcer — in the mouth or on the skin — that hasn't healed within a few weeks.
Bleeding or discharge that isn't normal for you, from any site, deserves a prompt conversation.
A persistent new pattern — frequency, discomfort or appearance — is worth reporting to a doctor.
Especially beyond a few weeks, or a voice change without a cold to explain it.
Food feeling stuck, or indigestion that doesn't settle, should be checked rather than endured.
In shape, size, colour or sensation — take a photo on your phone and show a doctor.
A sign is a reason to ask — not a reason to fear. Most of these have ordinary causes. The purpose of knowing them is simply this: ask early, and let a qualified doctor answer calmly.
Risk & Prevention
Factors linked with a higher chance of some cancers. Having one doesn't mean cancer will develop — it means it's worth being mindful.
No habit guarantees prevention — but these meaningfully reduce the risk of several cancers, and improve life regardless.
Early Detection & Screening
With more options, gentler treatment and less disruption to a family's life. That is the whole idea behind early detection — nothing more mysterious than that.
When to Consult
You don't need certainty to book a consultation — a doubt is reason enough.
Any sign from the list above that persists beyond two or three weeks — don't wait for it to become urgent.
A periodic check-up of the mouth and throat is a wise habit — ask a doctor what interval suits you.
Share the history with a doctor so appropriate checks can be planned calmly, not fearfully.
If a test has been recommended and you have questions about it — ask them. Understanding a test helps you complete it.
FAQ
No. Cancer cannot pass from one person to another through touch, sharing food, close contact or care. You can support a person with cancer without any risk of catching it.
No. Most lumps have ordinary causes such as cysts or infections. Only a proper medical examination and tests can tell — which is exactly why any persistent lump should be shown to a doctor rather than worried about silently.
Screening looks for possible changes before any symptoms appear, in people who feel well. Diagnosis is the process of finding out what is causing a sign or symptom that has already appeared. Both are done by medical professionals.
No. Only a small proportion of cancers run strongly in families. Most occur due to a combination of factors over time. If cancer does appear more than usual in your family, share that history with a doctor so appropriate checks can be planned.
No single habit guarantees prevention, but avoiding tobacco and areca nut, limiting alcohol, staying active, eating well and keeping timely check-ups meaningfully reduce the risk of several cancers — and improve general health regardless.
